This week during the tutorial, we were told to make small groups and come up with an idea for a website.
The idea that my group members and I came up with is a website that we solely named; thenightlife.com.au.
This website is mainly aimed at the youth in Australia today, in that if someone is coming from another state for example, and wants to get to know what is in stock for him or her in the night, in case he or she wants to go out for a drink or to a club, they can always rely on this website.
So this website is generally a means of marketing the bars and the clubs that each state has. In order for the bars and clubs to have their information displayed on this website, they shall have to pay a certain amount of money. As a promotional gig, we are planning to make the first month free and after that, failure to pay up shall lead to no exposure for that particular bar or club, or any other place that functions in the night and would want to be known to the public.
When looking at the collective intelligence, we are going to employ AJAX, flash, etc. In that, there shall be an obvious use of html, and the css so as to make the website as exciting and inviting, as well as javascript and xml. Flash shall also be used on the buttons that shall lead to the information for example so as to make the site more interesting, to also suite the whole ideology of a night life being searched for.
This website shall be using a sort of page rank in that, it shall have a main page, that a person can type in a club or bar and get information that shall lead to other information, kind of the way in which Google works. Hopefully, it shall have a strong network effect, in that the more the people use it, the more essential or useful it shall become.
We are also going to employ iteration, in that there shall be photos and videos that shall have be doing the same thing over and over again, for example, when one gets onto a certain pages, there shall be videos that shall play repeatedly, and one can choose whether to have sound or not, and also a photo stream of images of people at the places, as well as what the places look like.
There is also a possibility for this website to result into a sort of combinatorial explosion, as it starts off as something ordinary and leads to a variety of information.
Crowd sourcing is another thing that is definitely going to be employed in the website formation. According to the S.James’ book “The Wisdom of Crowds”, individuals are not good at making good decisions and usually rely on a sort of source to guide them to what they would accept as right. This website is taking advantage of this information and is thus helping people make decisions faster, and as easily as possible.
The website shall also accept reviews concerning the clubs and bars and this shall help the people in their decision making, and also to make it more or less a long term social network, though not like facebook or twitter.
This all thus explains how using collective intelligence/wisdom of crowds is different to, or should I say, better than, doing it in a centralized, controlled fashion.
The problems that we think might be encountered include;
· the fact that this may be too wide to achieve as successfully as planned
· it may be too hard to comprehend thus does not enhance rich user experience
· it is also mainly be aimed at the youth and thus does not extend its market range to the elders per say
· the clubs and bars might refuse to pay up, or even sign up, and thus shall lead to no or limited network effect
_*over and out*_
